In 2009, Chrysler, Dodge’s parent company, moved to make the RAM a stand-alone title for its line of pickup trucks. Therefore, if you opt for a Dodge pickup truck produced before 2009, it will be referred to as “Dodge RAM,” while pickup trucks produced after 2009 are called RAM trucks. Dodge RAM and RAM are still owned by the same parent company. The distinction is that Dodge brands its SUVs, minivans, and cars as “Dodge” and its pickup trucks as “RAM.”
Chrysler purchased Dodge in 1981, but kept their most beloved models, which included RAM pickup trucks. From 1981 to 2009, these pickup trucks were known as “Dodge RAM” trucks, before they made the move to restructure the brand Dodge and RAM divided into two distinct vehicle brands.
Dodge and RAM split into separate lines to allow Dodge to focus on creating models to compete with rivals such as Chevy Corvette and Jeep Wrangler.
